Apple's iPhone has been green before, but the richness of the Apple iPhone 13 Green and iPhone 13 Pro Alpine Green is something else.
This is the inkiest, deepest green Apple's produced to date.
Apple unveiled the two new finishes on March 8, during an hour-long product launch event that focused primarily on Apple Silicon and its use in an M1 Ultra and a new Mac Studio .
More color choice is always welcome, especially in Apple's flagship phone and the iPhone 13 Pro, which we called "one of 2021's best smartphones."
The iPhone 13 Pro, which features matte glass on the back and a stainless steel band around the body gets Alpine Green. The iPhone 13, which has a glossy glass back and brushed aluminum band, gets simply Green.
Sitting under the frosted ceramic shield glass, the iPhone 13 Pro's Alpine Green is deep enough to absorb the light, making it look even darker than it really is, so much so that the Apple logo nearly disappears. This contrasts with the ultra-shiny and cool-to-the-touch green-hued stainless steel band.
If you're staring at the Super Retina XDR display, the Alpine Green is almost undetectable, save for a hint of it around the thin metal edge that wraps around the ceramic glass screen cover.
If you're looking for something more dramatic, there's the iPhone 13 in Green. We know, this is a slightly less powerful iPhone 13 model (two cameras instead of three, no LiDAR), but that gloss, almost wet-paint like green back is stunning.
The iPhone 13 ceramic glass is almost exactly the same as what you'll find on the iPhone 13 Pro, but the polished surface and liquid-like green are as bold as the iPhone 13 Pro's back is muted. Even on the iPhone 13's brushed metal band, the green looks more substantial, like it was carefully painted on.
Where the green on the front of the iPhone 13 Pro is a nearly undetectable hint, we can clearly see the deep green line running around the edge of the phone screen.
The color used on both these phones may, in fact, be exactly the same. You can tell by looking at the camera array hump. On the iPhone 13, it has a brushed glass look, which makes the green look almost exactly like the Alpine Green on the iPhone 13 Pro. The polished glass camera array on the iPhone 13 Pro shows through a green that, you guessed it, looks just like the Green on the iPhone 13.
With these new colors, the iPhone 13 now comes in Green, Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED. The iPhone 13 Pro is now available in Alpine Green, Silver, Gold, Graphite, and Sierra Blue.
Aside from the new colors, these are the exact same iPhone 13 and 13 Pro handsets we reviewed last year. Same 5G capabilities, A15 Bionic CPUs. Super Retina XDR displays, same camera arrays, and Cinematic video mode capabilities
Pricing also remains the same. the iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999 / £949 / AU$1,699, which gets you 128GB of storage and the iPhone 13 starts at $799 / £779 / AU$1,349 for the same amount of storage.
Pre-orders for the new phone colors kicked off on Friday, March 11 and they'll be available to buy on Friday, March 18.
Forget VR headsets – Apple now has a patent for a VR car
A new Apple patent hints at how the company could use VR to entertain passengers traveling in an autonomous car -- while also helping reduce motion sickness to boot.
The released schematics reveal how a driverless car and a VR headset could work together to keep travelers entertained on their journeys. VR headset wearers could be dropped into a game, or they could invite friends and celebrities to be their virtual travel companions.
On the business side, the patent (first mentioned on PatentlyApple ) also showed how users could attend a business meeting while on the move – on the back of a flatbed truck no less. Rather than being confined to a virtual meeting room, you'd be able to look out at passing scenery, so you'd be less likely to become disoriented and motion-sick.
Alternatively, the headset could mix up your method of transportation. For a more relaxing adventure, you could be treated to a boat ride down a river, while those after a more high-octane thrill could see zombies chase after their vehicle in a post-apocalyptic scenario.
And you wouldn’t just be treated to a visual spectacle. Apple has plans for you to be given a true 4D experience as the car’s HVAC system blows air in your face, the speakers play surround sound audio, and the seat jostles you using its own internal motors.
As with all patents, there’s no guarantee that we’ll ever see Apple bring these systems into an actual car, or the long-awaited Apple MR headset – but it certainly paints an interesting picture of what plans it could have for its long-awaited Apple Car .
It’s clear that Apple believes that we’ll one day do away with driver’s seats entirely, and it’s already thinking about what that means for travelers. Based on the patent, Apple seems keen to develop innovative new ways to keep passengers entertained and productive while on the move.
We’ll have to wait and see what Apple comes out with over the coming years (or more likely decades), but if it can convince passengers and lawmakers that removing a car’s steering wheel is a good idea, who knows what we could see it develop next.
Plus, with the patent’s mention of a flatbed truck implementing its VR systems, Apple could be envisioning a whole fleet of Apple tech-filled vehicles; autonomous Apple Plane, anyone?
Xbox Series X now has a pink controller that isn’t based on a pig
A new Xbox Series X pink controller is now available, which means we can finally own a controller that doesn’t resemble a pig. Sow’s about that, then?
Previously, Xbox players who wanted to own a pink controller would have to make do with the admittedly awesome Minecraft Pig controller or design their own using Xbox Design Lab . Now, though, an official Deep Pink Xbox Series X controller is here – and you can buy it for $64.99 (around £54.99).
The Deep Pink Xbox Wireless Controller has the same perks we’ve come to expect from Microsoft’s new pad. You’re getting the same textured triggers and bumpers, a hybrid D-Pad, Bluetooth support, and a dedicated Share button.
If you want to take your love of pink to the next level, Razer has released a Universal Quick Charging Stand that matches the new Deep Pink controller, so you can fully charge your controller in under three hours and have a handy place to store it too.
So many colors
Microsoft has released several custom Xbox controllers since the Xbox Series X|S consoles were launched. To date, we’ve seen Robot White, Carbon Black, Pulse Red, Electric Volt, Shock Blue, and now Deep Pink. We’ve seen three special edition controllers, too, in the form of the 20th Anniversary Special Edition , Daystrike Camo Special Edtion, and Aqua Shift Special Edition .
There have also been two game-specific pads: the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 – Halo Infinite Limited Edition , and the Forza Horizon 5 Limited Edition . Of course, if none of those controllers appeal you can always design your own at Xbox Design Lab.
Even though controller options aren’t as plentiful on PS5 , Sony has also released some colorful DualSense pads. After shipping the Original White controller, Sony also added a Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, Galactic Purple, Starlight Blue and Nova Pink controller for players to pick up.
